You’re good at this. Really good.
You’ve spent years building technical depth that most people in the room can’t match. You solve the problems nobody else can solve. You deliver. You show up.
And something is still in the way. Not your capability. Not your work ethic. Not your technical knowledge.
For a long time I believed the same thing you probably believe right now. That the work should speak for itself. That experience and results would eventually be recognized.
That the political and relational side of the organization was a game I didn’t need to play, and honestly one that felt inauthentic to who I was.
I was wrong.
Nearly 40 years in IT. Sales engineering, solutions architecture, leadership, data centers, NOCs. I watched people with less technical depth move into rooms I couldn’t get into.
Not because they were better. Because they understood something I hadn’t figured out yet. That at a certain level your career stops being about what you know and starts being about how you show up in the rooms that matter.
At some point I stopped and paid attention. I watched the people who were moving forward. New hires stepping into roles I was qualified for. Colleagues who stopped hiding behind the technology and started showing up differently. Some made it. Some didn’t. But there was always something. A specific thing, that was either in the way or wasn’t.
I had to figure out what that was for myself. Not from a book. Not from a course. From years of watching, struggling, and eventually doing the internal work that nobody around me was talking about.
That process changed everything. And when I started helping a few people around me work through the same thing, something became clear.
I had a gift for asking the questions that nobody else was willing to ask.
The uncomfortable ones. The ones that make you sit with something you’ve been avoiding.
That’s when I knew this was the work I was supposed to be doing.
The people I work with are not victims of their company, their manager, or the market. That’s not always easy to hear.
But it’s the most liberating thing I can offer someone. Because when you see what’s actually in your control, and take ownership of it, everything changes.
That’s the moment everything shifts. Not through answers. Not through frameworks. Through the questions nobody else was willing to ask, and the answers they find in themselves.
That’s the conversation I have. The uncomfortable one. The one nobody else in their life is willing to have with them.
